Waits at airports are usually the most tedious. The hours that you use to go to wait for your flight are full of expectation: you have just started your vacation. And those back, oh, those back: for a mixture of tiredness, sadness for the return to routine and a multitude of memories and sensations to assimilate. So, once you have located the terminal, boarding gate and have checked that everything is fine, you still have a couple of hours or even more (if you have linked connections with time to spare) to get bored.
We are going to propose some activities that you can do in the airports. Some are more common and others more extraordinary. There are activities that you can do in practically all airports, while others are only available in some terminals in the world. The important thing is that you do not miss your flight, so watch the clock and the screens with information (there can always be changes, better not to trust).
There are some things you can do that are already classic and that you can do yourself: a good novel (also in the electronic book), magazines or travel guides of your destination are perfect readings. You can also choose crosswords, sudoku or mandalas. Some people take the opportunity to watch a movie or series online on their Tablet or to play a video game. And let’s not forget the music! You can prepare your playlists to travel or related to your destination. So better bring batteries to spare or get close to a plug, if you do not want to stay disconnected for the rest of the trip.
If you travel accompanied, things improve. There are lots of games to hang out with. With a simple deck of cards, you can entertain yourself and your companions. In case your companions are children, there are playgrounds for them. Also some televisions, sometimes with children’s programming or video games. At the Vancouver airport, there is an aquarium that will delight children. Anyway, sitting in front of the window and see planes take off and land is always fascinating, especially for the little ones.
If you spend many hours at the airport, you will have to eat something. Try, as far as possible, to find a local option to get to know the typical gastronomy. The disfrutones have their eyes on Kirei by
Kabuki, at t4 of the Madrid Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport or Porta Gaig, at the El Prat airport in Barcelona. In Frankfurt, you have the Top Air and in Heathrow (London), Plane Food. All these options have renowned chefs behind, so I’m sure your palate will be more than satisfied. You can also take a look at the airport stores. Maybe you have forgotten something you can buy at a good price in the Duty-Free, give yourself a treat or take advantage to buy a souvenir. Keep in mind that if you have traveled to a country where the currency is the euro, you still have some change left and you can spend it there (the coins will not be worth much back to Spain unless you are a collector).
Although if you do not worry about money, surely there are souvenirs at your height. For example, at the Dubai airport, there are gold bullion vending machines. You can not leave without that gold bullion that you need so much even though the stores are closed!
Nor should we lose sight of health: if your flight involves spending many hours sitting, you can take advantage of the time you spend at the airport to exercise. If you are a fan of golf and travel to Hong Kong or Dum Muang – Thailand-, congratulations because you can practice your favorite sport. In Seoul, for example, you have ice skating rinks (watch out for falls!). To do a few laps, nothing like the pool at the Doha airport. And if you are in mindfulness, make the most of your time practicing yoga at the San Francisco airport. And finally, the most surfing travelers cannot stop trying the wave of the Munich airport.
Traveling is beautiful
Another possibility implies relaxation and beauty. Do not want to take advantage of your wait to be more handsome and relaxed this holiday? Or maybe to be more handsome and even relaxed around the corner? In many airports, you have hairdressing, massage or nail bar service. Helsinki Airport goes further: it has a spa with sauna and swimming pools so you can relax before your trip. What would you sign up for? And the Tokyo airport has a quite unusual activity: a pure oxygen bar. You can choose it with the essence you prefer (eucalyptus, cinnamon, pine, grape …) and say that mitigates the effects of jet lag. And finally, if you pass by the Singapore airport, do not forget to try their massage chairs (which are also free), because they are hard to forget …
Healthy mens in corpore sano
But not only there is taking care of the body, the mind and the spirit also need to be pampered. The Singapore airport has the unique and surprising facilities ‘Kinetic Rain’. In London (Heathrow), you not only have the temporary exhibitions but the magnificent sculpture of ‘Slipstream’, of 77 tons. Janet Echelman, the artist who recently covered with nets the Plaza Mayor in Madrid, has her
installation at the San Francisco airport (which also houses many temporary exhibitions). And if you are passing through the Philadelphia airport, you will be astonished by this installation: 300 recycled beer bottles arranged on wheels like a clock.
For moviegoers, the airport in Hong Kong has an IMAX 4D cinema (for the purpose of 3D – they provide a pair of glasses -, special effects and chair movements are added). And for music lovers, the City of Music, Nashville (USA), has live concerts in the four stages scattered around its airport.
And to calm your spirit, what better than to get in touch with Nature. The Butterfly Garden of the Singapore Airport has a 6-meter waterfall and almost 50 species of butterflies. And the airport of Kuala Lumpur has a real tropical rainforest in a satellite terminal where you can admire one of the most threatened environments in the world.
If you have to spend a lot of time in an airport where you are passing through, you can always hire an express visit to the city and see its most significant monuments. We suggest you do it in advance to make the most of your time. In this case, ask our agents, who will be happy to advise you.
Surely taking a look at our proposals we get inspired a little more when it comes to travel. Or at least, do not look with reluctance and panic the hours you have to spend in an airport waiting for your flight. With a little patience and entertainment, time flies by (never better said).
